Never thought that I would live to be 45 and now i'm looking at the 45th reunion.
I quit school before graduation to enter the navy. I served two years of shore duty in Philadelphia followed by two years of sea duty aboard the carrier Essex.
Seperated from the military in 1967 I returned home and started working at the A&P plant in Horseheads. Being young, foolish and a hard-head it was only the beginning of 17 more jobs leading up to my career in Corrections. I have been a correction officer since January 1989.
I will be leaving corrections at the end of this month(August 2010). Retirement and hopeully lots of travel beckon. However, my wife has started laying out the to-do list already.
As for the travel, I have done some preliminary planning and the trip is almost 8000 miles so far. Yellowstone, Glacier Park, the Grand Canyon, Arches NP. Still have to fit in Yosemite NP, the Redwoods, the Alamo and more.
Still working on that spring 2011 trip; route planning, stop-overs, campgrounds, etc.. The wife and i bought a travel trailer last year and put it to use upon my retirement. We went on a 4 day do nothing trip to Thompkins campground on Cowanesque starting the day i retired. Then on Oct. 7th we took off with no time limit except to be back for election day.
It turned out to be 22 days away. We stopped in Gettysburg, PA then we drove the northern half of the Skyline Drive taking 6 days to do it. Off the parkway and on to Bristol, TN for 2 days. On to Franklin, NC for another 4 days. Then up the southern half of the Blue Ridge Parkway with an overnight stop in a campground on the parkway. Off the parkway and over to the Raleigh area to visit family for 2 days. Up to suffolk, VA to visit friends for 2 days. On over to Newport News, VA to visit friends with an overnight stay and then on home. 2260 miles; about 1/4 of what we hope to do this year.
July 1, 2011 at home for about an hour getting more supplies for camping. Have been out for the last 11 days with 4 more to go on this trip. We will then be home for 7 days before traveling to Cedar Point in Ohio for 4 days. We then return home for 1 day before heading to Washington, DC to attend the Christians United For Isreal rally and some sight-seeing in and around Washington.
